First Large-Scale Organic Light Emitting Diode Display System by Mitsubishi Electric

Mitsubishi Electric has released world’s first large scale display system in the 100-inch and above which uses light emitting diode (OLED) as its light source. The new “Diamond Vision OLED” features Mitsubishi’s newly developed video controlling technology, delivering seamless, vivid images. The new display features wide horizontal and vertical viewing angles reaching approximately +/- 80 degrees, with maximum brightness of 1,200 cd/m2 and high contrast which is twice as the other LED products, making it ideal for installation in relatively bright area like commercial facilities, stations and airports.

The new display has been built through connecting a number of standard modules where each measuring 384mm both in height and width, weighting eight kilograms. The new “Diamond Vision OLED” scalable design makes it flexible to form a certain size or shape, even against rounded surfaces. The OLED device of the display has been jointly developed by Mitsubishi Electric and Tohoku Pioneer Corporation, which creates light via a process of electro-luminescence (EL), where each pixel is consisted of an anode and cathode separated by a thin organic membrane. Sales of the new display system will commence on September 21st, 2010. The new “Diamond Vision OLED” will be on display during CEATEC JAPAN 2010 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.

New Ultra-Long Life Pinion Shaft by NSK

NSK has developed a new pinion shaft featuring a significantly longer service life than existing products. The new Pinion shaft is made from original NSK material SHX3 for use in the planetary mechanisms of automatic transmissions.

The new shaft features a 20% reduction both in size and weight, and it is suitable for more demanding operating environments. The new shaft is capable of operating at a minimum lubrication of 50 cc/min, in comparison with conventional minimum of 100 cc/min. Furthermore, the new shaft is capable of operating at a maximum temperature of up to 150 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than the conventional maximum of 120 degrees Celsius. Finally, the adoption of the cage and roller design has increased the maximum RPM capability to 3 folds that of a full-complement roller bearing from 12,000 rpm to 38,000 rpm. NSK is targeting sales of 2 billion JPY by 2015.

Iwasaki electric and Teijin have jointly developed world’s first all plastic LED lamp that uses a high thermal conductivity resin, which is made by combining Teijin’s RAHEAMA high thermal conductivity carbon material and polycarbonate resin for making the housing of the lamp instead of aluminum. The new LED lamp which is commercially named “EYELAMP” will be sold under Iwasaki electric by the end of 2010. Well, the all-plastic is really the housing of the Lamp and it does not include the bayonet cap.

The new lamp which weighs only 300 grams, offers one tenth of the power consumption of a conventional mercury-vapor lamp, with brighter illumination, lasting for 40,000 hours, roughly seven times than conventional lamp. The new product comes in a warm-colored 3,000 (Ra80) model as well as white 6,500k (Ra70) one.

Sanyo is at it again by introducing Rechargeable Waist Warmer as well as 2010 version of the Rechargeable Neck Warmer, all members of Sanyo’s eneloop warmer series. The Rechargeable Waist Warmer is equipped with Thin Film Heaters, which can effectively warm the belly and waist with the hyperthermic effect of the thin film heaters. The Rechargeable Waist Warmer ENW-WW1S uses eneloop mobile booster (KBC-L3A) as its power source.

The new ENW-WW1S is designed for effective thermal conduction as well as in preventing overheating. The thin film heaters are made of carbon and special materials, allowing it to fit the body comfortably all year round at home or work. This cordless rechargeable device can be used in various occasion, whether is commuting by bicycle or motorcycle, or during winter sports or any other outdoor activities. The product is made in two sizes of Medium (M) and Large (L) for both men and women. The belt is adjustable and it can be washed by hand (excluding the heater and the power source). 

The 2010 version of Rechargeable Neck Warmer warms around the neck with the hyperthermic effect of the built-in thin belt heater and it can be charged with eneloop mobile booster as well. It is designed to prevent overheating as well. It is available in colors of ivory and black. In addition to these products, Sanyo also introduced the 2010 version of Rechargeable Hand warmers. The waist and neck warmer will hit the Japanese market on October 14th, 2010.

Sony SP100-Solar Series conductive

Sony Chemical & Information Devices Corporation has begun full-scale mass production of solar cell conductive film for photovoltaic modules. The SP100 Series is a film-type conductive bonding material that bonds solar cell with metal ribbon which acts a conductive line for the electricity generated by the cell.

The new SP100 Series offers a low-temperature bonding at 180 degrees Celsius in comparison to conventional soldering of 200 degrees Celsius or more, resulting in significant reduction in residual stress after bonding on cells for an improved yield during module production. The SP100 Series can also be used to bond thin cells measuring approximately 150?m, which are weaker against thermal stress during soldering than standard thick solar cells.

The SP100 Series uses Anisotropic Conductive Film (ACF) technology which normally used for such applications as mounting of a driver IC on an LCD panel, providing a stable contact between the solar cell and metal ribbon through heating and pressurizing conductive particles which has been distributed evenly into the epoxy-type resin, resulting in simultaneous heat-curing of the resin and reliable conductive equivalent to that of soldering.

Furthermore, since the material is a film type, there is no dispersal of material to the light receiving area, making it ideal to be installed in narrow areas, capable of usage at widths as small as approximately 1mm, allowing it to ensure a wide light-receiving area through reduction of busbar width. The SP100 Series is free of such materials as flux and lead, with an aim of alleviating the environmental impact after disposal.

Japanese government introduce new data network system

Japanese government will introduce cloud computing to its data network systems and  information network-operating costs from the current 390 billion yen a year by 2020, Internal Affairs and Communications Minister Kazuhiro Haraguchi said Friday. Cloud computing, which allows software and stored data to be accessed remotely via the Internet, is said to be effective to cut computer operating costs.

   
Haraguchi told a news conference that a shakeup in the government’s data network system is necessary, noting that the government as a tax collector needs to be bold in renovating old-fashioned data systems.
   
On Friday, the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry convened a meeting of an experts panel for the first time to discuss concrete steps to revamp the government’s network systems, officials said.

Currently, government ministries and agencies operate a total of 2,059 data network systems, many of which are based on old-fashioned large mainframe computers built by makers’ own specifications.
   
As much as about 180 billion yen in costs are spent annually to operate those mainframe systems, which include immigration and pension data.
   
The continued use of the mainframe systems prevents newcomers from entering the market and keeps system-operating costs from being reduced, they said. 

New CMOS image Sensor chip

Canon has released industry’s largest CMOS image sensor. The new sensor has a chip size measuring 202 x 205 mm. According to Canon the expanded size brings about the capability of greater light gathering, where it can capture images in 1/100th the amount of light required by a professional model digital SLR camera.

The new CMOS sensor is among the largest chips that can be produced from a 12-inch (300 mm) wafer, making it 40 times the size of Canon’s largest commercial CMOS sensor. The new sensor provides the capability of shooting 60 frame-per-second video with an only 0.3 lux of illumination. Potential applications includes video recording of stars and nocturnal animal behavior. 
I am sure there are other types of applications that we can think of, requiring only 0.3 lux of illumination. So much for reaching era of miniaturization!!! source

New gyro-sensor XV-3700CB

Epson Toyocom has made an announcement on commercial development of its latest gyro-sensor XV-3700CB. The new XV-3700CB gyro-sensor has a high sensitivity featuring a wide detection range which has been optimized as an input device for motion user interfaces. 


Typically, sensing the motion of persons or objects with high accuracy requires the angular velocity to be sensed over a wide range, from a slow speed to a fast speed. Typical sensors are not able to simultaneously provide a wide sensing range and good stability as well as noise characteristics. However, the new gyro-sensor XV-3700CB retains the low noise level and outstanding bias stability thanks to QMEMS technology. 

Furthermore, the new XV-3700CB is capable of accurately sensing motion over a wide range by simultaneously outputting two modes, a high speed mode and a low speed mode, all in a single package. The new XV-3700CB comes in form factor of 5.0 x 3.2 x t1.3 mm.

NuVinci bicycle transmission Fallbrook Technologie

Three years ago, Fallbrook Technologies introduced its NuVinci Continuously Variable Planetary (CVP) N170 transmission for bicycles. The device created something of a stir in the cycling community, as it replaces traditional derailleurs with a rear hub containing metal spheres, plus it also replaces distinct gears with a continuously variable system of transmitting mechanical power – kind of like comparing a three-setting desk lamp to one with a dimmer switch. Riders can change gears even when not pedaling, they don’t need to worry about improper chainring/cog combinations, and the fiddly bits aren’t out in the open where the dirt can get at them. The N170 is heavier than a conventional derailleur system, which is why you don’t see it much on bikes other than cruisers. That could change, however, with this Wednesday’s announcement of the NuVinci N360 transmission. Fallbrook claims it has all the good points of the N170, but is 30 percent lighter and 17 percent smaller.

Without going into too much detail, the CVP incorporates rotating, tilting metal balls positioned between the input and output components of the transmission. Tilting the balls via a handlebar-mounted twist shifter changes their contact diameters and varies the speed ratio. The N360 has six balls, as opposed to the N170’s eight, which is a big part of what makes it smaller and lighter.
Fallbrook states that the N360 has an increased ratio range of 360 degrees... it’s not immediately clear what that means, technically-speaking, but the result is more ratios to choose from. It’s also said to be smoother and easier to shift, and to require 50 percent less twist rotation to go from the lowest to the highest ratios. Because the hub interface is now housed inboard from the bike’s rear dropout, the transmission should stay cleaner and be better protected. The company also claims that due to the hub’s sealed design, it should not require any maintenance or adjustments.

While Fallbrook is particularly interested in getting their product on commuter and electric bikes, one can’t help but wonder how it would do on a road or mountain bike. Well, according to the N360’s spec sheet, it weighs 2.45kg (86.4 ounces). By contrast, the combined weight of Shimano SLX front and rear derailleurs, shifters, freehub and cassette comes out to about 1.3kg (46 ounces).

So weight-wise at least, there’s still a ways to go before it usurps the derailleur. If the N360 lives up to its hype, however, those extra thousand grams could be worth it.

advanced display technology

Only a small percentage of backlight actually makes its way out through the multiple layers that make up the ubiquitous LCD displays we use today. That may change with the development of new filter technology at the University of Michigan. White light is sent through tiny, precisely spaced gaps on nano-thin sheets of aluminum and is said to result in brighter, higher definition color reproduction. Other benefits of the technology include efficiency gains and simpler manufacturing.

A traditional LCD display is made up of two layers of polarizers, a color filter sheet, and two layers of electrode-laced glass in addition to the liquid crystal layer. The new color filter cuts out a couple of extra layers by acting as a simultaneous polarizer. It's less than 200nm thick, and consists of a layer of Zinc Selenide sandwiched between two sheets of aluminum.

At precise intervals, tiny slits trap and transmit white backlight out through the structure. Different spacings essentially result in different wavelengths being caught. Gratings set at around 360 nanometers apart emit red light, those spaced at 270 nanometers emit green, and blue colored light comes from slits spaced about 225 nanometers apart.
The research team, led by Jay Guo, an associate professor in University of Michigan's Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering, used the technique to produce a tiny University logo which is about a sixth the size of a human hair at 12 x 9 microns. OK, so it looks a little blurred in the photo, but that's because it has been magnified about 5,000 times.


The pixel size produced by the new filter is around eight times smaller than those on an iPhone 4 and "about an order of magnitude smaller than those on a typical computer screen," according to Guo. "Amazingly, we found that even a few slits can already produce well-defined color, which shows its potential for extremely high-resolution display and spectral imaging." Future uses for the technology include wearable or extremely compact displays as well as monitors and projectors.

The university is currently looking at patenting the technique while the researchers look to make the technique production-ready, a task said to be made easier by the potential for simpler manufacturing processes.
Detailed information on the technology can be found in the research paper, entitled "Plasmonic nano-resonators for high resolution color filtering and spectral imaging", which has now been published in Nature Communication.

New Bioplastic produced from Non-edible Plant Resources by NEC

NEC made an announcement on development of a new high performance biomass based plastic made from non-edible plant resources. The new bioplastic has been produced through bonding cellulose which is a main component of plant stems and cardanol, a main component of cashew nut shells. The new bioplastic which boasts a high plant composition ratio of more than 70% features a level of durability which is suitable for electronic equipment.


The new bioplastic offers twice the strength of existing PLA and same level of conventional CA resin, while featuring more than twice the heat resistance of PLA, and approximately 1.3 times more than CA resin. The water resistance capability of new bioplastic is comparable to PLA and approximately more than 3 times of CA resin. The molding time for the new bioplastic is less than 50% of PLA and comparable to conventional cellulose and petroleum based plastic.

Extremely Compact Absolute Pressure Sensor by EPSON TOYOCOM

Epson Toyocom has announced the development of tiny absolute pressure sensor. The absolute pressure sensors are designed to measure pressure in relation to zero pressure. The new XP-6000CA sensor has a capability of detecting height changes in 3 cm increments through sensing changes in pressure. The XP-6000CA sensor incorporates the new QMEMS (Combination of Quartz and MEMS) pressure-sensing structure allowing it to squeeze into a tiny 7.0 x 5.0 x 2.0t mm package with a total pressure accuracy of +/- 30 Pa and high resolution of 0.3 Pa.


The new XP-6000CA sensor pressure measurements are resistance to effects of noise due to use of frequency counting, a principal based on crystal measurement technology, to measure pressure. The new sensor offers a pressure measurement range of 30 kPa to 130 kPa and operating temperature of -40 to +85 degrees Celsius. The samples of the new sensors will be available in October of 2010.

RENESAS Unveils Two New SoCs for DTVs and STBs for use in Terrestrial Digital Broadcasting

Renesas has release two new system-on-chip (SoCs) EMMA3TJ to be incorporated in digital television (DTVs) and EMMA3TS to be incorporated in Set-top-boxes (STBs). The two SoCs are targeted specifically for terrestrial digital broadcasting in Japan and South American countries, which includes Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. Both SoCs have integrated demodulator circuits for ISDB-T terrestrial digital broadcast format that is used in Japan as well as South America, and circuits for the ISDB-S satellite broadcast format used in Japan. 

Furthermore, the SoCs have on-board decoder circuits for MPEG2 and H.264 video compression protocols, plus they come with peripheral interface circuits, such as USB 2.0 and Ethernet.

In addition to mentioned feature, the EMMA3TJ features functionality that is required for 3D TVs, allowing display of 3D video from digital broadcasts or Blu-ray discs. The samples of the EMMA3TJ and EMMA3TS will be available sometimes in 4th quarter of 2010 with price tag of $39 per unit. The mass production is planned for December of 2010 with expected combined volume of 300,000 units per month.
