Renesas Electronics announced the availability of its newly developed SuperSpeed Universal Serial Bus (USB 3.0) host controller with 85% reduced power consumption when peripheral devices such as mice are not connected to the ports. The new uPD720200A device offers a data rates of up to 5 gigabits per second (Gbps), while achieving a low power consumption of 50 milliwatts (mW) with no peripheral connection to the ports.
The new device comes with a same foot pint as the previous product, allowing the system designers to develop notebook PCs with longer battery life, while maintaining a high data transfer rate. Along with the device, Renesas provides a USB Attached SCSI (UASP) driver which is designed specifically for enhancing the performance of the company’s USB 3.0 host controller. The device is not only targeted toward note PCs but also for other digital home appliances. The sample price of the new device is set at US$10 per unit, however the unit price will fall to US$3 when the mass production to begin on Oct. 2010, with expected production of 2,000,000 units per month. The uPD720200A host controller will include the Window device driver software.
